2018 Secondary Transfer Window in MLS closes Wednesday night

Time is almost up for MLS teams to make transfers and player trades, as the 2018 Secondary Transfer Window is almost closed.

The transfer window for the league will officially close at 12:59 am ET on Thursday morning. Teams can sell players past that date to external leagues, and they can still sign free agents up until the roster freeze date.

Per FIFA regulations, MLS teams are able to request International Transfer Certificates (ITC) from players’ former clubs to complete signings, loans and transfer deals. While deals can otherwise be completed outside the transfer windows, receipt of a player’s ITC is required in order to add players to official rosters and for those players to be eligible to play in competitive matches.

The close of the transfer window also means that the trade window within MLS for players will close for the season. However, trades for non-player assets, including international roster slots, allocation money, allocation order slots and MLS SuperDraft picks, can take place outside the transfer window periods.

The 2018 Roster Freeze Date is September 14, 2018, at which time clubs must submit their final 30-man roster for the season. Rosters cannot be changed from that date through the day after MLS Cup in early December.
